JERALD JOHNSON STYLING BY MARK SALDANA
We sit down with Tyler Henry, the twenty year-old behind Hollywood Medium and our favorite CRAZY gift behind OC’s Crazy Cozy Cool holiday guide to talk coming out of the “psychic closet”, fave celebs, and rules of the trade.
Tyler Henry is a man that needs no introduction. But if Tyler needed one, it would go a little somethin’ like this. As a young boy, Tyler saw something the he just couldn’t describe. Years later he would come to the understanding that what he envisioned was his grandmother’s death. At this time Tyler realized he had an ability to tap into another world, or at least, see another reality that others couldn't. Tyler’s gift allows him to connect with people that have passed on by intercepting messages and snapshots from the other side—then mediates them to his subjects. Harnessing this gift throughout his life took time, Tyler compares messages from the other side to a volume dial and after years of focus he has learned to control the sound(s). How you ask? Forgo all your previous notions of crystal balls, Tyler uses a pen and notepad to help concentrate during his conversations with the other side. Tyler’s ability to hone his gift has been a key factor in not only launching his own television show Hollywood Medium but changing the lives of the people he encounters.
With a hit T.V. show and book all in the same year (this year to be exact), Tyler has been a busy guy. OC’s resident busy guy, Humberto Leon, is a huge fan of the show, so much so we offered an in-person reading and/or a skype session with the medium himself as one of our CRAZY gifts in OC’s Crazy Cozy Cool holiday guide. Naturally Humberto had some questions for Tyler—from coming out of the “psychic closet” to rules of the trade, Humberto chats with Tyler below.
Readings seem to take a lot of physical and emotional energy—Do you have a post reading relaxation routine?
I typically come home after a reading and immediately take a nap to unwind.
Do people frequently ask the same questions? I feel that most people really want insight on love, future, wealth etc.
Typically I find most people want guidance in the primary areas—future security and resolution with the past.
Have you ever been really disturbed/scared during a reading with a client? How’d you adjust/cope real-time?
I've certainly had situations that were unpredictable, but I trust enough in this process to know that if something is coming through, it's for a reason and there's no need to be afraid of it.
How often do you get visited and are there times when it is just not the right time?
Thankfully now that I've grown to refine my ability, visitations are a little more on my terms, but there's definitely instances that are less than ideal.
If you can communicate with any celebrity that has passed away, who would it be?
I think it would be fascinating to connect with Sam Cooke.
Do you have a favorite celebrity that you did a reading for? And is there anyone you would love to read for?
I'd say my favorite celebrity reading so far has been with Marlee Matlin, I think it's airing on the show this spring. And I'd love to read Lana Del Rey!
Besides the gift you have now, what other ability do you wish you have?
I wish I had the ability to do stand-up comedy. That takes serious skills.
You have a TV show and now a book, what's next?
I'm so excited to start doing group events, reading giveaways, and continue filming, writing, and sharing my ability with as many people as I can.
Favorite on screen clairvoyant? And you can't use Whoopi from Ghost.
Matt Damon's depiction in Hereafter is the closest I've seen to an accurate portrayal of mediumship/clairvoyance.
