Work: Tom Sachs at Sperone Westwater

Last year, Tom Sachs gave OC a very special tour of his studio just around the corner from us on Centre Street. There, we got to meet his cat named Monkey, talk about space, and even spy some works in the making. So you can imagine our delight when we stepped into Sperone Westwater gallery on the Bowery this week and spotted some pieces already familiar to us from our visit.

At first, Tom Sachs: Work may feel a little disjointed––what exactly ties together a plywood Tibetan flag studded with screws, a dollhouse-like model of Sperone Westwater, and a collection of James Brown paraphernalia (from his actual estate), among other things in the gallery? What could feel like a recent retrospective (the oldest piece in the show dates from 2002) is actually a show about the ritual act of labor. Spot the glossy drops of resin, visible screws holding together pieces of plywood, and painstaking pencil details. The show pulls together some of the best of the master craftsman's pieces, and is worth checking out.

Tom Sachs: Work is on display through December 4, 2011.
