Longtime friend and collaborator Justin Peck, resident choreographer at The New York City Ballet, recently partnered with OC co-founder Humberto Leon who designed the costumes for his new ballet, The Times Are Racing. The performance interprets encounters between strangers on city streets, and the costumes—which inspired Opening Ceremony’s Spring 2017 collection— channel serendipity and connection. Drawing on 19th-century photographs of Ellis Island, where individuals from diverse backgrounds crossed paths, the collection is a reflection on the American melting pot. Lace and satin brush against Americana denim. Loose silhouettes ideal for long journeys get a luxe upgrade with macramé fringe and embroidery. Like a rendezvous at the island’s kissing post, the collection is idyllic.
The work of W.W. Denslow, illustrator of The Wizard of Oz and other classic American fairy tales, inspired this season’s prints. Across cowl-neck dresses, kimono jackets, and mesh tops, a storybook plays out: tots explore psychedelic gardens, interlacing hands pluck roses, monkeys learn to fly. Much like the American Dream, these collective fantasies inspire and connect across cultures.
Also featured in Spring 2017 is the Action capsule, which was inspired by the rich, contemplative score in The Times Are Racing. Composed by electronic musician Dan Deacon, the music is Deacon's personal meditation on American identity. The capsule of hoodies, tees, and tanks features empowering language—DEFY, FIGHT, PROTEST, ACT, UNITE, and CHANGE—and embodies what it means to be an American.
Below we present our latest editorial featuring Opening Ceremony Spring 2017, where photographer Tom Johnson drew inspiration from ballet, casting dancers as models, capturing them in an abandoned Brooklyn church.
