So when we heard that the MET Gala’s theme for 2017 was Rei Kawakubo herself ( the second living designer to be honored after Yves Saint Laurent), we were not surprised. Naturally, we decided to honor the world of CDG in typical OC fashion, teaming up with Otto, the mastermind behind dot COMME, to bring 250 of our favorite archival CDG pieces across the world to our OCNY and OCLA locations.
Based in Melbourne Australia, dot COMME has been a longstanding favorite when it comes to vintage, partnering with the store in 2014 to feature limited-edition archival pieces from W & L T, Walter Van Beirendonck's ‘90s women's and menswear line for OC’s year of Belgium. Needless to say—during such an iconic month in fashion—we were ready for round two. Below we sit down with Otto to find out how dot COMME became the industry’s go-to for all things vintage Comme ...
Is it easy for you to identify which clothes are from which collection/year?
It’s very easy. I’ve seen the collections countless times and handled many thousands of pieces so the hallmarks are there that tell you from which period and which collection it’s from. Personally I find this important because I enjoy the history of the brands and seeing the way the collections interact with each other.
You’re like a walking CDG encyclopedia! What about your clientele? Are they part of the fashion industry? Tourists who don’t even know what CDG is?
Online it’s a lot of people in the fashion industry. In the store we get a real mix—plenty of younger buyers and often it’s their first experience with the brands. I’m always more than happy to chat about the designers!
Any big plans/projects for you guys in the future?
We will continue to keep growing the Melbourne shop and the online store as these are the business priorities. Next pop up on the horizon will hopefully be in Sydney—this is well overdue as many Sydney customers travel down to the Melbourne store! We recently had two [pop-up shops] in Paris that were very successful but want to explore different cities around the globe. I guess it’s a matter of how much time we have as they require a lot of preparation in the curation. We announce these events via our social media so you’ll have to watch that space!
