“You can buy any jacket to make a fashion statement. Or buy the Whirlibird, and be one of the few to make a function statement.” So read a 1988 advertisement from Columbia, the Pacific Northwest sportswear icon, for its classic 3-in-1 parka. It’s true, too, of our new Columbia × Opening Ceremony collaboration. Photographer Stef Mitchell captured the Whirlibird and other archival silhouettes — in designed-by-OC prints and colorways — on a breezy day on the edge of a forest in upstate New York. The sky was as gray as our fleeces were bright, and Columbia’s TurboDown insulation, heat-regulating lining, and water-sealed seams came in handy. Back in the concrete forest of Manhattan, they were eye-catching, too. Which is, in the end, is the best functionality of them all.
