Since we founded Opening Ceremony we have always envisioned ourselves as a site of culture, one that cultivates conversations and hopes to encourage discovery. Sourcing innovators from all over the world, season after season it’s our mission to unearth emerging designers, not only presenting each one’s collection but also be a platform to help tell their story. For Spring/Summer ‘17 we’re excited to share some of our favorite new brands in an editorial photographed by Daniel Cavanaugh with words gathered and selected by Chance Llanes. And while presenting these brands is always a source of celebration for us, there’s no denying that they come at a time when the world’s political and social climates are unstable. We sought to understand how this landscape influences each designer’s work—as artists what are they resisting? What are they hoping will change? And more importantly what the people wearing their clothes think … and feel.
From Mimi Wade who hopes to reclaim girly-ness with pop-punk-princess designs to Barragán who seeks new realities by embracing the identity of an outsider to the youth wearing the clothes who strive for authenticity, or in one case shave away the beauty ideals women have carried in the past: We not only introduce our favorite New To OC brands from this season, but share a dialogue. From the models to the designers, see and hear their stories below.
