We highly doubt that Acne Studios’ creative director Jonny Johansson was ever a fan of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie’s The Simple Life, but based on his latest collection for the Swedish brand, he can surely sympathize with the sentiment behind it: a longing for the past, when life was seemingly less complicated.
The Fall 2017 collection felt like a modern, deconstructed take on Little House on the Prairie, with earth tones and delicate floral prints dominating the palette, and traditional crafts, from knitting to hand stitching, providing texture and embellishment. Long, flowing dresses featured layers of frayed silk and chiffon with exposed threads and fabric patches, while crocheted jumpsuits topped off with cozy knits that skimmed the floor. Suede and leather looks added a weightier feel to the collection, and oversized menswear inspired pieces, from blazers to trousers, kept it from feeling too precious.
And it wouldn’t be an Acne show without a few statement accessories. This season they showed leather bags that could have easily been inspired by woven baskets, irregularly shaped hoop earrings, and colorful, geometric shades. The entire collection felt thoughtful and straightforward, with a hint of playfulness. Feet on the ground, head in the clouds—not a bad place to be.
