It’s been said before but we’ll say it again—there is nothing normal about the 2016 Presidential Election. What started out as just an unlikely candidate has turned this campaign season into a full on soap opera saga, complete with name-calling, fear mongering, threats of violence, and more than a few skeletons coming out of the closet. Despite the absurdity of it all, it’s important to keep one thing in mind: this is real life. The outcome of this election will affect not only you, or I, or the American people—it affects everyone. That may sound like an exaggeration, but it’s not. In the age of globalization, the policies and legislation enacted over the next four years will have ripple effects throughout the world, and for generations to come. Not to put the pressure on, or anything.
With the election top of mind during New York Fashion Week in September, Opening Ceremony co-founders Carol Lim and Humberto Leon knew that they wanted to use the show to make a statement. What they came up with was the Pageant of the People, a night of community and conversation, with a side of comedy. OC friends and family from Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein to Natasha Lyonne, Rashida Jones, and the one and only Whoopi Goldberg graced the stage to talk about the issues that mattered most to them, encouraging guests and viewers—including you—to vote in the process.
Filmmaker Sebastian Mlynarski captured the pageant and sat down with Carol and Humberto to talk about the current political climate, their own experiences as children of immigrants, and the profound importance of this election. Opening Ceremony was inspired by the principles of the Olympics: the idea of bringing together people from all around the world, and all different walks of life, to exchange ideas and foster connections. And it’s that sense of openness and community, such an integral part of OC’s DNA—not to mention our country’s foundation—that is at stake in this election.
Whether it’s staging a mock pageant, starting a conversation with friends and family, or simply going to the polls, all we’re asking is that you take action, no matter how small. As Whoopi put so succinctly, “If you don’t vote, you can’t bitch.” So get out there, and VOTE.
