Creative Time is an organization committed to working with artists on the dialogues, debates, and dreams of our time. Not only does Creative Time present the most innovative art in the public realm, but they have been providing new platforms to amplify artists’ voices for decades. From Kara Walker’s giant sugar sphinx at the Domino Sugar Factory to the twin beams of light that illuminated Lower Manhattan after 9/11, to Nick Cave’s dancing soundsuits at Grand Central Terminal to Duke Riley’s massive flock of pigeons transforming the sky at the Brooklyn Navy Yard,Creative Time works closely with thousands of artists to commission, produce, and present trailblazing public art projects. Their work is guided by three core values: art matters, artists’ voices are important in shaping society, and public spaces are places for creative and free expression.
Last night, we couldn’t have been more happy to see Carol and Humberto being honored at the annual event for their ability to push boundaries, forefront artists and designers, and use their influence to weigh in on the important issues of our time. Creative Time found inspiration in the way Carol and Humberto approach their craft, their consistent support of emerging talent and their pioneering collaborations with artists and brands—continually reinventing their fashion shows, from a political
“Pageant of the People,"
to most recently a protest-spirited ballet
With this said, it only made sense for the duo to be involved every step of the way in the evening’s creative vision—turning all your notions of a seat gala dinner upside down. From having the guests eat family style
with a Lazy Susan to finding more than a dozen artists to create flags
protesting our current system of values to designing a tablecloth that literally used traditional patterns from all the countries (eleven to be exact) represented in the evening’s menu … It was perfect, perfectly Opening Ceremony.
Below we share pictures of the monumental occasion that we celebrated with some of our closest friends and family.
