In a lot of your work, knit fabrics are actually the medium. What made you decide to start making wearable pieces versus just works of art?
To me, Pearle Knits sits in the space between art and fashion. It is craft, which has it’s own history of being taboo, and not thought of as real art. I still make each piece of clothing on my own; I’m like Rumpelstiltskin spinning my yarn into tube top gold. I find it fascinating to use a medium in different functions, testing the parameters it can work within. Knitting has been a very versatile medium for me to explore so I am staying here for the time being.
Okay quick fire round of random questions:
Favorite bodega snack: Oreo’s!
Favorite styling in a movie: Overall styling in a movie is Baz Luhram’s Romeo + Juliet BUT, if we are talking just costume design, I have always been super influenced by the movie Ever After with Drew Barrymore. The costumes were done by Jenny Beaven. I am in love with the Renaissance era.
Current Netflix guilty pleasure: Gossip Girl. I have watched that series like 4 times it’ so sad.
Drink you order when there's no cocktail menu: Tequila soda. Lol wait are you asking non alcoholic drink? If so I would order a hot chocolate!
Best thing to re-gift for the holidays: I actually have never re-gifted anything that I can think of, so I will say my favorite gift to give is a knit beanie.
